What Walmart, Google, Apple, Facebook, IKEA, Costco, Staples, Kohl’s, Macy’s, & Walgreens Know That You Don’t

Let’s start with Walmart. Walmart essentially has two main points of focus: 1) offer extremely low-cost products; 2) offer just about every type of household product you can imagine in megastores that you could actually live in (literally). The company’s focus isn’t to be super green, socially progressive, or anything of the like. It’s focus is to sell a world’s worth of cheap products and make an astounding profit. As a part of that, Walmart has come to realize that it can get electricity for a lower price from solar power than from the electricity grid in many locations. It has installed more solar power than any other company in the US. It has about 90 megawatts of solar power capacity installed on its US stores — that’s 89 million watts, or enough power capacity for about 1.5 million 60-watt light bulbs.

Don’t get too cynical and make the common assumption that Walmart is going solar for the good PR. Sure, it’ll take advantage of the positive PR, but it wouldn’t be installing anything close to this amount of solar power if it weren’t good for the company’s bottom line.

The fact of the matter is very simple: solar power can save electricity consumers muchos money, whether those consumers are individuals, small businesses, or mega-corporations.

Walmart isn’t the only major company going solar, by the way. IKEA actually has the highest percentage of its rooftop space covered in solar panels. It has solar power installed at about 89% of its US stores! Google, Apple, Facebook, Costco, Staples, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Walgreens, and many others have also been going solar in a big way. As you can see in the infographic below, companies in various industries have jumped on the solar bandwagon… and the main reason for this is surely the large cost savings that come from going solar.

To reiterate the key point here, it is that solar power can now save many of you a lot of money. If you have the opportunity to go solar and haven’t yet, you may be missing out on thousands of dollars of savings. Stop throwing your money away, or sending it to electricity monopolies to burn (which is also harmful to the environment and costs you at the doctor’s office).
